I'M BACK!! (4 years later...๐)
| the gang all here and ready to turn up! |
I decided not to go to grad school. I ended up rescinding my offer to USF and then I left my first job post grad after 2.5 years being there. I had to find myself and my true calling.. I definitely experienced the "20's blue" as I was leading up to the infamous "quarter life crisis". I was determine to find myself before I ever reach 25! I had to see if healthcare was really what I wanted...or if I was holding onto a dream I picked for myself when I was 18. It was also extremely crucial for me to figure out if I wanted to be in this field for the rest of my life before I committed to continuing my education. I think the biggest waste in life is nonchalantly wasting your own time and your parent's money. Sure, I can always make the money back after I graduate to repay my parents.. but why throw your money towards something you're not even sure about and sit through school. In addition, I didn't want to wake up 30 years from now and hate my job. Grad school was another 3 years of my life and for $100K/ year (that's only tuition), I had to be 100% sure that I wanted this for myself and not because I wanted to please my parents.
While I was having an inner debate with myself, I travelled... alot! I did this because I knew that if I were to go back to school one day, I wouldn't be able to get the chance to travel and see the world until really far down the road. So I had to seize this opportunity and go wherever and whenever I can. So I packed my luggage and I went to Portland, Los Angeles, Austin, Dallas, New Orleans, Hawaii, Vancouver, London and Paris during these 4 years.
While I travelled, I applied to different jobs just to see what else is out there. One job in particular was a tech job... something I had no experience in or even knew anyone who was at a start up to get a leg in. But I still applied anyways because why not? I had nothing to lose at this point. I did it because the worse they can do is not get back to me. I know I did not meet much of their requirements, like having a background in start-ups or knowledge about data and etc. but I did have a lot of calendaring admin knowledge. And guess what, someone took a chance on me and I got the job at the hottest #1 start up on LinkedIn!
Fast forward to today, that job has opened so many doors for me in the tech world! Don't get me wrong, tech is great and everyone should try it out if given the opportunity, but with everything in life, it has its ups and downs. You get the fast environment, colleagues who are your own age, great benefits, competitive pay, casual wear, free meals and a chance to move up quick. But it definitely has it's downfall too...like the fact that can get very unstable. On a good day, it's great but on a bad day... it can get pretty bad. I was off boarding people daily at one point where I just knew this was not normal. Someone can be here one day, and then the next day they're gone... and it doesn't matter if you're the CEO or whoever because I've seen that happen too.. It is definitely cut throat and I have seen my fair share of "friends" stepping on each other just to move up or throwing someone else under the bus just to save their own ass. The start up/ techie life is definitely a risk, but you learn so much. Whether that is work growth or self growth- like growing a thicker skin and learning that not everyone has good intentions. But you also find really good friends from there if you're lucky! I would say if you are in your 20s, have nothing to lose and want to experience the tech life, you should try it. But be sure to do your research on the company first! There is nothing worse than joining a start up that is in its super early stage that you have to worry about job stability. Or even worse, you join a huge and accomplished late stage company that has an extremely toxic culture. All in all, I enjoy the tech life but that's because I did intensive research, looked into the work culture myself during my interviews and made sure their revenue was secure before signing on with the company.
What else happened while I was gone..? OH! My sister got engaged and finally had her wedding right before San Francisco went into shelter in place. That was very interesting to say the least. Um..my relationship with the dentist basically ended and now I think we are pretty much up to speed on my current events LOL But for those who don't know me.... Hey, I'm Mey! Dont forget to follow and join me on my wild journey in 2020. There won't be much travel this year, but there is always enough crazy in my life! And seeing how 2020 is folding out so far, I think its safe to say it's crazy enough..
